Start Me Up debuted on the Stones' 1981 album Tattoo You. The song was first recorded as a reggae-rock style song in 1975 for their Black and Blue album but was dropped from album. The band re-recorded the song in 1978 for the Some Girls album and again in 1979 for the Emotional Rescue album but shelved it both times until a producer discovered the rock version among the recording archives as the band was looking for songs to debut on the 1981 tour.
